The soil improvement works under the nuclear island of Unit 5 have been successfully completed, according to the the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

In a recent Facebook post, Péter Szijjártó said that he had a phone conversation with Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, on the occasion of the Paks II. project once again reaching another important milestone. The soil improvement works under the nuclear island of Unit 5 have been successfully completed and the soil improvement of the nuclear island of unit 6 has also started.

In parallel, the preparation for the full excavation works is underway, with the appointed subcontractor continuously moving to the site, so that the works can start in mid-September – the minister said. He added that 24000 piles have already been driven into the ground during the soil preparation works, which means that just under a third of the required piles are already in place.

Together with the Director General of Rosatom, the important tasks for the coming weeks have been reviewed, which are necessary to further accelerate the project; more than a thousand people are already working on site and this number will increase significantly in the coming period – Péter Szijjártó said.

The minister also pointed out that the recent setbacks in energy policy have once again shown that only those countries are safe who can produce most of the energy they need on their own. Given Hungary's capabilities, this means that we have the task of speeding up the construction of the two new units of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant – he said.
