Péter Szijjártó: the core-catcher will arrive in Paks in one or two weeks
Speaking of the meeting: Péter Szijjártó said that the project is well underway, with nine hundred people working on the site, and this number is constantly growing, with between eight and ten thousand people at peak times. He highlighted that the production of long lead items is continous, so everything is in place for the two new units to start production by the beginning of the next decade.
He said that the ship carrying the core-catcher is sailing along the Romanian part of the Danube towards Hungary. – We expect its arrival in one or two weeks – he said, adding that it depends on the water level of the Danube and the time it takes to tranship at the Iron Gate. The foreign minister recalled that the forging of the reactor vessel also started months ago. Péter Szijjártó informed that the soil improvement works, which are crucial for the safety of the construction site, are in full swing, with a total of 76 thousand piles planned to be drilled, of which more than twenty thousand have already been completed. He said that the soil improvement under the future nuclear island has already reached 82 percent completion, which has allowed the start of tests of full excavation to a depth of 23 meters. – These processes are key to the first concrete pour, which will take place in a few months, he said.
The minister also pointed out that, in addition to the Russian Contractor, Western European, American and Hungarian companies are working together harmoniously on the project. He recalled that the government had succeeded in obtaining full exemption from all EU sanctions for the Paks project. – The Paks project is not subject to any sanctions, so the construction, technical and financial implementation can continue without any problem in the coming period – he pointed out.
The minister also emphasized the importance of the investment. He said that the success of the Paks project is also crucial for the protection of the environment, the overhead cuts and the long-term, independent security of supply of Hungary.
